The Worshipful Company of Shipwrights is one of the Livery Companies of the City of London. The Shipwrights have not, unlike other Livery Companies, ever received a Royal Charter. Instead, it is considered incorporated "by prescription" because the body has for a long time (since the twelfth century) used the title. The Company was made a Livery Company in 1782. The Company is no longer, as is the case with other Livery Companies, a trade association for members of the trade, in this case, shipbuilding. Now, the Company supports maritime research and various charities. The Shipwrights' Company ranks fifty-ninth in the order of precedence for Livery Companies. Its motto is "Within The Ark Safe For Ever".
