Busking Day

Busking Day

Busking Day has been observed on the 3rd and 4th day of every month since January 1996. Busking Day celebrates busking and buskers who fill streets, subway/metro stations, and other public places around the world with music and entertainment. It is observed with mindful attention to those who earn their entire living by busking. In other locations, Busking Day is also known as Buskerfest, or International Busking Day.

Those who celebrate Busking Day don a joyful attitude and compose poems, rhymes or songs relating to the plight of buskers. Others celebrate Busking Day by enjoying, supporting, and promoting buskers. A unifying theme in celebration is inclusiveness and acceptance of diverse groups of people.

Various annual or semi-annual celebrations of buskers and busking are held regularly throughout the world. In the United States, Denver, Colorado holds its international buskerfest in early July or late June each year. Chicago, Illinois has held a buskerfest on or around August 3 each year beginning in 2002. It is unclear if this festival will continue to be celebrated following Chicago's February, 2006 ban on buskers in some parts of the city.

Ferrara, Italy, hosts an annual gathering of buskers each August, with hundreds of thousands of attendees. Coffs Harbour, Australia, is home to one of Australia's largest busking celebrations each year in early October. Ireland's all Ireland busking festival has been held annually in Newcastle in August of each year since 2001. In Wymondham, UK, an annual busking day was last observed in July 2006 as part of its annual music festival. Singapore's annual buskers' festival has drawn large crowds from Asia and the rest of the world since 1996.
