- Lancaster Gate tube station
Lancaster Gate is a
London Underground station located nearLancaster Gate onBayswater Road inBayswater (City of Westminster ), to the north ofKensington Gardens . It is between Queensway and Marble Arch on theCentral Line . It is inTravelcard Zone 1 .History
The station opened on
July 30 ,1900 as part of theCentral London Railway (now the Central Line). The original station building was typical of the work of the line's original architectHarry Bell Measures but this structure was demolished and a new surface building constructed as part of the hotel development above in c1965.The station today
The station suffers from being located between a quiet and relatively expensive residential area, and Hyde Park. Few of the surrounding residents choose to use the underground system, and as such the station has less patronage than other central area tube stations - 38,500 per week. Lancaster Gate has one lift shaft with two lifts in use.
Aside from the many hotels, including the neighbouring Royal Lancaster Hotel the area is particularly quiet, lacking shops, restaurants, bars, or other entertainment venues, despite being close to central London, although the far busier
Paddington area is only 5 minutes' walk away which does have many shops, restaurants and bars to choose from. The area surrounding Lancaster Gate station has some stunning views and wealthy residents.Redevelopment
The station was closed from
3 July 2006 until13 November 2006 so that the lifts and station could be refurbished. [cite web | url=http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tube/travelinfo/lancaster-gate-closure.pdf | title=Lancaster Gate Closure | accessdate=2006-07-03 | year=2006 | format=PDF | publisher=Transport for London ]References
