He graduated from the
Sindh Muslim Law College of theUniversity of Karachi , Pakistan. He did hisLLB from the Sindh Muslim Law College of the University of Karachi in 1957.Career
He practiced
law until 1979. He was elected President of the District Bar AssociationKhairpur for a record term of six years continuously. He was elected to the highest elected office of the Advocates of Pakistan as its Vice Chairman for two terms in 1974 & 1979 when he was elevated to the bench as Judge of theSindh High Court atKarachi .From 1981-1984 he was the provincial Minister for
Law ,Education ,Culture ,Sports &Local Government . He got premature retirement from theSindh High Court & reentered politics. He was elected as member of theProvincial Assembly of Sindh and became leader of the house andChief Minister of Sindh , Pakistan from 1985-1988.He was elected to the Parliament (
National Assembly of Pakistan ) in 1990 & became Defence Minister till 1993. He was again elected to theProvincial Assembly of Sindh as well asNational Assembly of Pakistan in 1997. He resigned his Provincial Assembly seat and became theMinister for Education (Pakistan) till 1999. During this time he was chosen,by the parliament by vote, to fill the nomination for the post of the President although this decision was changed under difficult circumstances in 1998. He was appointed Advisor to the Prime Minister of Pakistan for affairs of the Province of Sindh with powers of theChief Minister & Status of a Federal Minister in June 1999. He continued in this position until October 1999 when theArmy of Pakistan took over in a military coup d'état on12 October , 1999.Fact|date=September 2008Ghous Ali Shah is the Provincial head of the
PML-N Sindh & has been elected for another 4 year term from 2006-2010 as President of the Sindh Province. He has been elected in this position on numerous occasions since 1986.It has been reported that Ghous Ali Shah was one of many candidates considered by
