Born in West Berkshire, near St. Albans,Vermont , he attended the public schools,Franklin County Academy atSt. Albans, Vermont , and theUniversity of Vermont . He settled inBoston , Massachusetts in 1882 working in the manufacture ofiron andsteel .He was elected as a Democrat to the
Sixty-first United States Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death ofWilliam C. Lovering and served fromMarch 22 ,1910 until his resignation, effectiveJanuary 4 ,1911 , having been electedGovernor of Massachusetts . He served from 1911 to 1913.He denied clemency for
Clarence Richeson for the sensationalized murder of Avis Linell.He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection as Governor in 1912. Afterwards he resumed his former manufacturing pursuits and managed his large real estate holdings in Boston. He died in
Jamaica Plain , Massachusetts onSeptember 13 ,1939 and is interned inForest Hill Cemetery .External links
