Lieutenant colonel Knut Haukelid (
May 17 1911 in Brooklyn,United States –March 8 1994 inOslo ,Norway ) was aNorwegian resistance movement soldier duringWorld War II , most notable for participating in theNorwegian heavy water sabotage . He was the twin brother of actressSigrid Gurie .A Second Lieutenant at the time of his first mission, he graduated from the Norwegian Military Academy in 1948 and served as a Major in the Telemark Infantry Regiment. He was later appointed Lieutenant colonel, and head of the home guard of Greater Oslo.
During
World War II Knut Haukelid and his small band of Norwegian soldiers sabotaged theNazi Germany controlledheavy water plant atRjukan in a long-range raid which began at an airfield in England. The heavy water produced at a facility in occupied Norway was vital for the Third Reich' participation in the nuclear bomb race.For his participation in this raid, Knut Haukelid was awarded Norways's highest decoration for military gallantry, the "Krigskorset med Sverd" or
War Cross with sword . He was awarded this decoration twice, in 1944 and 1947: the War Cross with two swords. In addition to his Norwegian decorations, Haukelid was decorated by the British with The Distinguished Service Order and later, by Sir Winston Churchill personally, with The Military Cross.When in 1969, Knut learned of his twin sister's death in Mexico from an
embolism , he also suffered an embolism, but recovered.In the Media
Books such as Knut Haukelid's "Skis Against the Atom" and Thomas Gallagher's "Assault in Norway: Sabotaging the Nazi Nuclear Program" provide accounts of the Norway raid and Haukelid's participation.
