Alexey Fyodorovich Treshnikov ( _ru. Алексей Фёдорович Трешников) (
April 14 1914 in the village of Pavlovka, now inBaryshsky District ,Ulyanovsk Oblast –November 18 1991 ) was a Sovietpolar explorer and leader of the2nd Soviet Antarctic Expedition and the13th Soviet Antarctic Expedition .He was involved in defending the
Northern Sea Route duringWorld War II and participated in the1948 Soviet expedition to the North Pole . Between 1954 and 1955, he was the leader of theNorth Pole-3 ice station in theArctic Ocean .He was also the president of the Geographical Society of the USSR since 1977 and the director of the
Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI) of theSoviet Union from 1960 to 1981. In 1982 he was elected Academician of theAcademy of Sciences of the USSR .A
