He isRouse Ball Professor of Mathematics in the Department ofPure Mathematics and MathematicalStatistics at Cambridge University and a Fellow of Trinity College. He completed his PhD entitled 'Symmetric Structures in Banach Spaces' at theUniversity of Cambridge in 1990 under the supervision ofBéla Bollobás , and from 1991 to 1995 he was a member of the Department of Mathematics atUniversity College London , where he performed his seminal work.In 1996 he received the Prize of the
European Mathematical Society . He was winner of the 1998Fields Medal for research onfunctional analysis andcombinatorics . In 1999 he was elected Fellow of theRoyal Society .In addition to scholarly papers on mathematics, Gowers is also the author of "Mathematics: A Very Short Introduction" and other works popularizing mathematics. He was consulted about the film "Proof", starring
Gwyneth Paltrow andAnthony Hopkins . Recently, he has been the editor forThe Princeton Companion to Mathematics , a comprehensive book that introduces and traces the development of various branches and concepts of mathematics.He is the son of composer
