New Zealand ), or stripy or eastern footballer (inAustralia ), "Atypichthys latus", is asea chub of the genus "Atypichthys ", found around southern Australia and the north eastern coast of theNorth Island of New Zealand to depths of about 60 metres, off headlands and offshore islands. Its length is between 15 and 30 centimetres.The mado is similar in size and shape to the
silver sweep but with a slightly flattened dorsal andventral profile. The body is silvery with prominent dark yellow-brown longitudinal bands, and all the fins are bright yellow. Small individuals act as cleaners, pickingparasites off larger fishes.Mado may be seen in schools around headlands and caves where there is abundant encrusting animals for these grazing fish to feed on.
