Founded in 1946, Pipe Dream was originally named "The Colonial News" but was changed during protests against the
Vietnam War . Pipe Dream is and has been since its creation an entirely student-run publication and is one of few in the country to operate without advisors.Circulation
The newspaper is distributed at Binghamton University's main campus in Vestal, N.Y., and at several spots in the downtown Binghamton area, including the newly built Downtown Center. All copies are distributed openly and are free to the public.
Format
Pipe Dream is published in tabloid size with the following regular sections:
- News: Updates on the latest in campus, local and national news from student journalists. Notable includes Police Watch which details incidents of alleged illegal escapades on campus as filed by campus police.
- Release: Arts & Entertainment section which looks at happenings on campus and popular culture at large.
- Opinion: Oriented towards campus affairs, national and global politics, as well as broader issues of campus life and humor.
- Weekend Warriors: Full color two-page photographic spread in the center of the paper which displays on and off-campus student events and activities.
- Fun Page: General comic and humor section including original comics by Binghamton students, as well as sudoku and crossword puzzles.
- Classifieds: General classifieds and student-housing rental advertisements.
- Sports: Game coverage and opinion stories on the Division IBinghamton Bearcats . Professional and national sports issues are also covered.Pipe Dream also publishes special issues for finals week, Spring Fling and the men's basketball season, among others.
Pipe Dream Online
As of February 2008 Pipe Dream relaunched its website http://www.bupipedream.com/ with improved content and layout. The site includes breaking news updates as well as archived articles from the print edition. For each Tuesday and Friday print issue the front and back page full color images are featured on the site, available in .pdf format. An enhanced Multimedia page displays recent event photos including campus activities and sporting events.
