Ernest A. "Ernie" Calverley (
January 30 1924 inPawtucket, Rhode Island –September 20 ,2003 ) was an Americanbasketball guard for theUniversity of Rhode Island . His famous "shot heard round the world," a midcourt shot atMadison Square Garden in theNational Invitation Tournament , helped get the Rams into the NIT final against theUniversity of Kentucky , which URI lost.Calverley led the
Basketball Association of America in assists in the league's first year, while playing for theProvidence Steamrollers . He later returned to URI to coach the Rams.Ernie was known as "The Spendid Splinter" of basketball.
