Penang Chinese Girls' High School

Penang Chinese Girls' High School (PCGHS),at Gottlieb Road, Penang, is one of the biggest Chinese schools in Malaysia. Often referred to as "Bing Hua" among the local Chinese community in Penang, is one of the leading girls' schools in Malaysia. It is renowned not only for its academic excellence but also its achievements in other activities.

Although the school and her education system have undergone many changes since its establishment in 1920, one fact remains the same - the school's tradition of producing well-educated, disciplined and refined young ladies year after year. The school motto of Decorum, Honesty, Diligence and Simplicity has aspired the girls to strive for excellence and success in whatever field they have chosen, while maintaining their sense of humility. The strong moral values that are taught at the school enabling the girls to differentiate between right and wrong, and to bear in heart their rich heritage. The strong survival and growth of this school is hugely owed to the never ceasing support and contributions of the local Chinese community. This school has been looked upon by many parents as the ideal school for their daughters. In short, the Penang Chinese Girls' High School has changed the status of the Chinese women race in Malaysia, from meek little wives into bold and determined young ladies that are well-positioned to play key role in today's society.

History

"'17 March 1919Proposal by 4 prominent members of the Hokkien Community --Mr. Tan Sin Chen, Mr. Lim Lu Tek, Mr. Khor Sen Lee and Mr. Cheah Seng Tin , to establish a school for Chinese girls. This fact still stands as the number of non-Chinese among its enrolment and alumni is next to none. The proposal was [unanimously approved and the Fukien Girls' School was established. Originally, the school was intended to be opened on 15 January 1920, but was delayed due to a number of problems among which were the lack of teachers and pupils.

8 March 1920Official opening of Fukien Girls' High School at Macalister Road.

11 March 1951Fukien Girls' School was renamed as the Penang Chinese Girls' High School and the primary school was renamed as the Penang Chinese Girls' Primary School.

January 1956The students attend their classes at the new school building at 2, Gottlieb Road

1962The school accepted full government aid. As a consequence, the school was divided into 2 sections -- a national-type school and an independent high school (for overaged pupils).

1963A kindergarten was opened. Thus, the school now provides continuous education from kindergarten to school certificate.(UPSR for primary level,SPM for secondary level and STPM for pre-university level)
