*"R. northamptoni" Mantell, 1848 (type)"Regnosaurus" (meaning "Sussex lizard") is a
genus ofherbivorous stegosaur iandinosaur that lived during the EarlyCretaceous Period in what is nowEngland .Discovery and species
The fossil remains were found near
Cuckfield inSussex , and initially thought to be from "Iguanodon ". However, Mantellreviewed it and felt it to be of a different creature, coining the name "Regnosaurus" in 1848. [cite book|title=The Dinosaur Hunters|year=2000|author=Deborah Cadbury|publisher=Fourth Estate, London|id=ISBN 1-85702-959-3] It is known only from a right mandibular (lower jaw) fragment. A fossil pubis was also recovered on theIsle of Wight .Recent research by Barret and Upchurch in 1995 [cite journal|author=Barret PM & Upchurch P|year=1995|title="Regnosaurus northamptoni", a stegosaurian dinosaur from the Lower Cretaceous of Southern England|journal=Geological Magazine|volume=132|pages=213–222] suggests that it is a stegosaur similar to "
Huayangosaurus ", as the jaws are very similar. A "nomen dubium ", thetype species is "Regnosaurus northamptoni".References
