- Ugly Duckling Presse
Ugly Duckling Presse [http://www.uglyducklingpresse.org/] is a
nonprofit art & publishing collective producing small to mid-size editions of new poetry, translations, lost works, and artist'sbook s. The Presse favors emerging, international, and “forgotten” writers with well-defined formal or conceptual projects that are difficult to place at other presses. Its full-length books, chapbook s, artist’s books, broadsides, magazine and newspaper all contain handmade elements, calling attention to the labor and history ofbookmaking . Among its better-known books are Nets by Jen Bervin, a redaction of Shakespeare's sonnets, and Poker by Tomaz Salamun, which was a finalist for the PEN award for poetry in translation. In collaboration with Loudmouth Collective, Deerhead Records, and with various visual and performance artists, Ugly Duckling Presse also has supported and participated in the creation of works off paper: these may be performed, or they may exist on digital video, CD, or tree bark.
The Presse maintains a small workshop and letterpress studio in the Gowanus neighborhood in Brooklyn. Its current members are:
