Hawar started his career by playing for Mosul Football Club in 1998 at the age of 17, but then moved on to Baghdad to join
Al Quwa Al Jawiya after impressing coachAmmo Baba . Hawar made his debut for Al Jawiya in 2000, winning fans with his quick speed and athleticism. After his great performance in Al-Jawiya, Hawar was called up to the Iraqi Under 20 Team by Nazar Ashraf. The midfielder made his debut as a substitute in the 1-0 defeat byEgypt in February 2001. Manama during Iraq’s 2002 World Cup qualifying campaign and has since won himself a regular place on the left flank in both the Olympic and the national team.Hawar was also part of Iraq's 2004 Summer Olympics team.
In order to qualify to the Olympics, Iraq needed to beat its last opponent,
Saudi Arabia , and hope for a tie between Oman vs Kuwait. In the last qualifying match, Iraq was winning, 2-1, but in the 89th minute, Hawar ripped the net with a stunning shot, giving Iraq a 3-1 win. As soon as the match ended, the game between Oman and Kuwait ended in a 0-0 draw, which meant Iraq qualified for Athens 2004. In the Olympics, Hawar lead the team to a 4th place finish, scoring against Portugal in a 4-2 win and also against Costa Rica in a 2-0 win.Hawar was criticized by some Kurdish nationalists for wrapping himself with the Iraqi national flag during a tournament. The current Iraqi flag was established by the Arab Ba'th party and is nowhere to be seen in the Kurdish areas of Iraq. The majority of Kurds are proud of Hawar and his achievements, however.
