Patrick O. Murphy, a bricklayer and twenty-five year old resident of the Grove section in Lowell, ran as an independent candidate for the Massachusetts's 5th congressional district seat in a special election. Biography

Murphy's parents, Joan and Daniel Patrick Murphy, were teachers in the Lowell public schools. Murphy attended Philips Academy Andover on a scholarship. He went on to study at American University, Trinity College, in Dublin, and Emory University.
