Trtl

TRTL or TRDL (as well as a number of other spellings) refers alternately to a number of instances of graffiti based in Detroit, Michigan, ostensibly painted by Ronald Scherz, or to the artist himself. The "tags" feature a simple cartoon turtle accompanied by the words "TRTL", or some other variation on the spelling. After the artist tagged the Detroit Institute of Arts building in early 2003, public awareness of the TRTL tags spiked, due in part to a small amount of the media's attention. The media speculated that the artist was commenting on how slow the city was being restored,Fact|date=September 2008 but the artist has never admitted to any similar motivation.

The president of the museum offered a $1,000 reward to anyone who turned in the person(s) responsible. In turn, local artist Geoff Burgeau, who (at the time) had an exhibit hosted by the museum, offered $1,000 to the first person to pie the DIA president. Burgeau's exhibit was subsequently removed from the museum. Filmmaker Tony Smith even made a documentary about Detroit graffiti, called [http://www.paintcansandpolitics.com/ Paint Cans and Politics] , focused primarily on discovering the identity of TRDL.

The Detroit Free Press eventually wrote a story implicating Ronald Scherz in 2004. [ [http://www.nograffiti.com/grafnews/9_04/turtle_sticks_neck_out.htm Turtle sticks neck out ] ]
