free software library for viewing PDF documents; it is maintained byfreedesktop.org . Poppler is based onXpdf -3.0 codebase and was created for two stated reasons: to allow easier reuse of the rendering engine to reduce redundant work, and to go beyond the goals of Xpdf and integrate more closely and reuse more functionality provided by the operating system (whereas Xpdf is very much self contained).Poppler is used by several PDF viewers and it can even be used as a backend to Xpdf. Many other applications also use poppler, such as
KOffice .The name comes from the Popplers on the animated television series
Futurama in the episode "The Problem with Popplers ".PDF readers using Poppler
Features extending
Xpdf * There are two working backends available, each some advantages and drawbacks:
** The cairo backend uses Cairo for drawing and enables the usage of antialiasedvector graphics and transparent objects, but doesn't smooth bitmap images, for instance scanned documents. As Cairo doesn't depend on theX Window System , poppler can be used on platforms which have noX server pre-installed, such as Windows orMac OS .
** The splash, which is the original xpdf backend, supports minification filtering of bitmaps.
** An incomplete backend for Qt 4, "arthur", is also available.
* Annotation support (planned). Enables support forannotation s stored in a PDF document. See [http://live.gnome.org/Evince/Annotations live.gnome.org] for an example.
* Form editing support (in preview release). Support to save filled pdf forms to a file.See also
