On October 17, 1779, the Continental Army bivouaced for the winter at Jockey Hollow. This was strategically sound because the elevation of Jockey Hollow was several hundred feet above the British to the east. In the days of horsepower, this was considered an impregnable redoubt. That winter was the "cruelest" of the war, including the one at Valley Forge the year before. [cite book | author = Tolson, Jay |title = How Washington'w Savvy Won the Day | publisher = US News and World Report | year = July 7-14, 2008] Desertions and mutiny were commonplace. On May 25, 1780, Pennsylvania troops put down a mutiny. Two of the ringleaders were hanged.
