Ronald G. Jarvis was a British
locomotive engineer.Born
5 November 1911 inHarpenden , Jarvis apprenticed atDerby Works underH. G. Ivatt , alongsideOliver Bulleid . During theSecond World War , he was sent toTurkey to oversee the construction of theTCDD 45151 Class (LMS Stanier Class 8F s), and then to India withWilliam Stanier . After the war, he worked briefly under Ivatt before being transferred toBrighton Works on theSouthern Region of the newly nationalisedBritish Railways , replacingBulleid . From 1956, the Merchant Navy and West Country/Battle of Britain classes of his predecessor were rebuilt to a design set out by Jarvis, removing all eccentricities that had plagued the maintenance of these locomotives.Jarvis returned to Derby to oversee the development of the Class 43
High Speed Train power cars. Jarvis died inLlandudno on2 September 1994 , and was buried atLlanbedr-y-Cennin .References
