Azeez Thayineri

Azeez Thayineri is well-known all over Kerala for his magnificent performance of various Mappila art forms. Hailing from Payyannur in Kannur district of Kerala, South India, he is active in this field for more than three decades. He has performed Mappila song concerts in thousands of venues in and outside the country. He performed Mappila Pattu in All India Radio for the first time at the age of 19. Later he mastered Kolkali and formed the "Sal Sabeel Kalavedi". "Sal Sabeel Orchestra" (popularly known as "SS Orchestra") is very famous in Kerala. Azeez specialized in "Tharattu pattu" which is usually performed in Muslim houses during various functions related to a newborn child. He has published hundreds of audio cassettes in this regard.

Azeez Thayineri performed successfully in various venues of UAE, Qatar, Singapore and Malaysia apart from numerous venues in India. He has a lot of disciples in the field of Mappila pattu, Kolkali and Duff muttu around the world. His SS Orchestra has about 25 permanent artistes and technicians. SS Orchestra is the only one of its kind in Malabar, which has its own modern Sound Recording Studio and Audio Systems. Azeez secured several awards from various organizations. Awards of Muslim Cultural Centres of UAE and Qatar, "Kerala Folklore Academy Award", "Ubaid Memorial Award" are some of them. This 55 year-old continues his dedicated service towards Mappila Arts.
