picture =Zurich International School (ZIS) is an all-day
international school in theCanton of Zürich ,Switzerland . The school is divided between four campuses spread alongLake Zürich : the Early Childhood Center is located on Seestrasse in Kilchberg; the Lower School inWädenswil ; the Middle School inHorgen ; and the Upper School on Nidelbadstrasse in Kilchberg. The school was formed by a merger between the
American International School of Zurich and theInternational Primary School of Zurich in 2001.The Upper School offers comprehensive courses leading to
International Baccalaureate (IB) andAdvanced Placement (AP) diplomas, as well as regular high school diplomas. The lower school holds the grades from Kindergarten to 5th grade. The lower school puts emphasis on teaching the students respect their environment and other people. The school years usually include a trip inside of Switzerland which all the students enjoy. The school encourages children to be open minded and creative in every way. Lower school is the place where if one cannot speak English learn it within a few months. They support children when falling behind a subject or needing extra help.
The middle school helps students learn crucial things like debating, making right decisions and speaking to a great crowd of people. While zis teaches skills that will help in future life other schools stay by teaching math, spelling etc. The children also learn to be aware and think globally, as well as being able to accept differences. In middle school they start teaching languages other than German and English, French and other languages are also taught. Each year the students will go on a trip to other countries that will interact with what they are studying. There are also the various sports trips where the sports teams visit other countries to compete against other schools. This is also in the upper school. Zis is a very competitive school where the students are more than eager to bring home a trophy. In 2008 the middle school will move buildings. They will move to where the upper school is. The upper school will then transfer to a new building in Adliswil.
In the upper school students get to mostly choose their subjects. This depends on what they want to do in the future. The subjects are from Drama to chemistry to philosophy. The upper school lets the children be independent and make their own choices. The grades are from 9th grade to 12th grade (13th grade is optional). The students get to choose to either do IB or AP or a normal high school diploma. Each grade has something different and new. They also don't do something with the entire grade anymore but more depending on what subjects you have. It is also a time of preparation for life after school. There is a student council and two sub-councils, Social Committee, and Sports Committee. Clubs such as Model United Nations, Amnesty International, Habitat for Humanity, Debate Club, Art Club, Running Club, Photography, Yearbook, are among the after school activities offered.
The school is currently sponsoring a school in Ghana. With ZIS's help, a new school building was able to be built which would help over a hundred Ghana children get an education.
