Ralph L. Fike High School

Ralph L. Fike High School, commonly referred to as Fike High School, is a public senior high school located in Wilson, North Carolina. Opened in October 1958, it originally had 650 registered students and a faculty of 28. It currently teaches over 1,300 students.

History

Fike High School was first opened on October 9, 1958 and named after Ralph Llewellyn Fike, the Chairman of the Wilson County Board of Education. Built on 500 Harrison Drive in Wilson, NC, the school taught grades ten through twelve, and remained so until integration in 1970, when it became a school solely for eleventh and twelfth grades. In 1978, the county and city schools merged, and Fike became a traditional four-year high school.

Current status

Ralph L. Fike High School currently educates over 1,000 students and has almost 40 instructors. The Principal is Dr. Steve Ellis. The school offers both Honors (H) and 4 Advanced Placement (AP) classes, as well as a course pathway designed around the International Baccalaureate (IB) program. The school has a strong tradition in sports, notably football. Their current mascot is the Golden Demon. The school has a strong music department. The 160-member chorus is led my Mrs. Kathy Sherrod. The 85-member band is led by Mr. Joey Tucker. Both the chorus and band travel to multiple competitions every year, most notably to Orlando and to New York.
