Brojomohun College

Brojomohun College ( _bn. ব্রজমোহন কলেজ) often known as B M college, is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in Bangladesh. It is located in Barisal town in South-Western Bangladesh.

History

Though Barisal was very famous as "Venice of the East" and "Crop House of Bengal" from her early age, she was not smooth in education sector as she was geographically backward from both Dhaka and Calcutta. Barisal Zilla School has been established in 1854 and it was a very smart and efficient step to spread knowledge among the mass. But the school was not sufficient enough as the number of students was growing day by day. To solve the problem Mahatma Aswini Kumar Dutta came forward and in 1884 a new school (BM School) has been established and has been named after his father Great Brojomohun Dutta. But as there was no facility of higher education after "Probeshika" so the District Magistrate of that time Mr. Ramesh Chandra Dutta requested Mahatma Aswini Kumar Dutta to establish a college and after some years Mahatma Aswini Kumar Dutta started Brojo Mohan College in Barisal Town. The date was 14 June, 1889.

The founder principal of the college was Babu Gyan Chandra Chowdhury. Ashwini Kumar Dutta taught English and Logic, Kali Prasanna Ghosh taught History and Kamini Kumar BidyaRatna taught Sanskrit and Bengali. In 1898 BM College has been transformed into a "First Grade College" from a "Second Grade College". In 1912 the college went to the Govt. management from personal management strategy. From 1889 to 1917 the regular activities of the college took place in BM Scholl campus. The college has been shifted to her own present complex in 1917. From the very beginning the college was so dynamic and the result was very good. The teachers of that time were very efficient as well as with vast knowledge. To observe those positive phenomena the authority of Calcutta University permitted to start Honors course in English and Philosophy in 1922, Sanskrit and Mathematics in 1925, Chemistry in 1928, Economics in 1929. In 1928 Shirimoti Shanti Sudha Ghosh stood First class First in Honors in Mathematics from Calcutta University. The time interval from 1922 to 1948 is called the "Golden Period" of the college. It was then known as "The Oxford of Bengal". The Governor of Bengal of that time Sir Udbarn once commented as following "The moffusil College promises some day to challenge the supremacy of the metropolitan (Presidency) College".

Due to the partition in 1947 college face lacking of teacher so number of students failed to about one-third of the previous. Due to lack of experienced teachers and sufficient number of students it was very difficult to conduct the Honors courses regularly. Again, the two years Honors curriculum conducted by Calcutta University was replaced with three Honors curriculum of Dhaka University. This was a great difficulty too. As a consequence, Honors courses except Mathematics had been abolished in1950. In 1952 Honors in Mathematics had also been eradicated. In 1964-65 session Honors in Economics has been restarted. Honors and Masters Courses of various subjects have been started within the time interval of 1972 to 2005-06 sessions. Time span from 1965 to now is called the "Age of Enrichment" of the college. Ex-Principal Prof. Mohammad Hanif is called the "Architect of Modern Brojo Mohun College". Presently there run 20 Degree (pass) courses, 18 Honors courses and 19 Masters Courses in Govt. BM College H.S.C. course had been abolished since 1999.

The poet Jibanananda Das taught at BM College.
