James Fullarton

James Fullarton

Born in Glasgow, James Fullarton studied at the Glasgow School of Art under David Donaldson. Since gaining his diploma in Painting and Drawing in 1969 he has been painting full-time, living and working in Ayrshire, on the west coast of Scotland.

Fullarton enjoys painting ‘en plein-air’ and follows the Scottish Colourists tradition of using strong colour and creating powerful images. He works directly from the subject matter which allows him to develop his ideas as he works on the canvas.

Drawing inspiration from the ever-changing light and its effects on everyday objects, Fullarton paints still-life and portraits as well as his much-renowned harbour and landscape pieces. His work is sold through a number of galleries across Scotland and London and is exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Institute of the Fine Arts.
