Chris Parnell (Australian)

Christopher Victor Parnell (born July 1953 in Sydney) is an Australian man who spent 11 years of a 20 year sentence in prison in Bali until his release in September 1996, which came in the form of a Presidential Pardon. He had been convicted in 1985 after Indonesian police claimed to have uncovered 12.5kg of hashish hidden in his hotel room.

Parnell was originally sentenced to the death penalty but this was later commuted to life imprisonment with a fine of $US50,000. On appeal it was further reduced to 20 years and $US30,000. Whilst in prison, Parnell was attacked and stabbed causing him to lose the sight of one eye and as a result of blood transfusions contracted hepatitis A, B and C.

Parnell now resides in Portarlington, Victoria.
