McCallum was born in
Fond du Lac, Wisconsin , the eldest of four children. He graduated fromMacalester College in 1972 with a degree inEconomics andPolitical Science . He obtained hismasters degree in International Economics fromJohns Hopkins University in 1974. He is a Christian Scientist.Political career
In 1976, McCallum won a seat in the
Wisconsin State Senate .McCallum won the Republican nomination for theUnited States Senate in 1982, but lost in the general election to incumbentWilliam Proxmire .During his 10 years (1976-1986) as state senator, McCallum was allied with the New Republican Conference, a now-dead movement of GOP activists who were fiscal conservatives, but liberal on social issues.
In 1986, McCallum ran for
Lieutenant Governor on the Republican ticket withTommy Thompson running for Governor. The Thompson-McCallum ticket served the state ofWisconsin for over a decade; they were elected for four terms in office.In 2001, President
George W. Bush appointed Thompson to be Secretary of Health and Human Services, making McCallumGovernor of Wisconsin. McCallum then selected State SenatorMargaret Farrow ofPewaukee, Wisconsin to be his new lieutenant governor.McCallum was defeated in the 2002
election . McCallum ran against DemocratJim Doyle and LibertarianEd Thompson (brother of Tommy). He was defeated by Doyle.McCallum is currently CEO of
Aidmatrix , a non-profit based in Texas that helps match charitable corporate donations of surplus food and supplies with organizations that need them. He lives in Lodi, Wisconsin.Family
McCallum is married to Laurie McCallum. They have three children: Zachary, Rory and Cara.
Laurie is an attorney and has served as a commissioner of the Wisconsin Personnel Commission and the Wisconsin Labor and Industry Review Commission. Zach is scheduled to graduate from Marquette University Dental School in 2007. Zach played soccer for four years for Marquette and was named to the Conference USA academic all-conference team. Rory is scheduled to graduate from
Drake University with a degree in business administration in 2007. Rory played on theDrake University Soccer men's soccer team and was named to theMissouri Valley Conference academic honor roll. Cara is a pre-dental student at Marquette University, playing on the Marquette women's club soccer team.Electoral history
