Tanem

Tanem is a village in the municipality of Klæbu, Norway. Located approximately four kilometres west of the village and municipality centre of Klæbu, called Klæbu, it's population (2005) is 977, and the two villages are separated by the river Nidelva. Tanem's population has grown explosively the last ten years, with almost a doubling in the number of houses. Almost none of the residents of Tanem work there, they commute to the city of Trondheim and it's suburbs. The only people who work in Tanem are construction workers with the new houses, the teachers at the Tanem Kindergarten and the Tanem Children's School (for ages 6 to 12), some industry workers, and a few farmers.

The village of Tanem provides a very safe and beautiful neighbourhood for families with children. The nearby forest covering the region's tallest mountain, Vassfjellet, is a haven for people fond of the outdoors, and offers good hiking, mountainbiking and foraging for berries. From the bottom to the top of the mountain run the ski lifts of Vassfjellet Skisenter, the only decent ski resort in the region. It has been the host of the Junior National Alpine Ski Championships numerous times, and has hosted the National Telemark Championships. Industries

Tanem has also been a site of strip mining for high-quality gravel and sand during the last 30 years. This is because Tanem has been under sea level during various ice ages, and large amounts of glacifluvial residue were piled up here, giving grounds to industrial sites. Since these sites have almost all been in forested areas, the residents of Tanem have been largely shielded from the ugly nature of strip mining. Other industries in the vicinity of Tanem include timber cutting and a water-powered electrical plant.

History

The village of Tanem dates back to before the Viking era. The hill today known as Tanemsåsen was fortified in ancient times, the remnants of this still exist and have been excavated. This hill gave its name to the municipality Klæbu in which Tanem lies, the name Klæbu being derived from the old Klæppabu, which means "the place where people live under the hill with a fort on it". Runestones have been found from this and later ages in the whole area, one of these is the Tanem Runestone.
