Voyager of the Seas is commonly referred to as a 'Floating hotel' due to the vast range of cutting edge facilities that it offers to cater for all tastes, along with some World-Firsts for cruise ships when the ship was released. Voyager features the world's first rock climbing wall (mounted on the funnel) and ice-skating rink at sea. During Voyager's first weeks at sea, there were doubts on how effective the ice rink would be due to the ice occasionally cracking in places due to the instability of the ship and hot ventilation pipes on the deck below, although these merely turned out to be teething troubles and today, the ice is used throughout the cruise as a public ice-skating venue and plays host to the ice show, performed in the evening to special effects by a world-class team of professional ice skaters.
Another innovative feature of Voyager of the Seas and another world first is the Royal Promenade which is a marble floored street stretching just over 3/4 the length of the ship and features shops and light dining venues such as a Ben and Jerry's ice cream parlor and a traditional English pub. This area is the heart of the ship for evening activity , along with the three story high 'La Scala' theatre in which some of the latest production technology is used to produce Broadway standard production shows at night featuring the ship's in-house dancers as well as other guest acts such as magicians and illusionists.
On the same deck is the three story dining room near the aft of the ship, serving upmarket fine evening food and wines, with set seating times and places and personalised waiter service to give a memorable dining experience. Attire for the dining room is either casual or formal and guests are notified through the ship's daily 'Compass' newsletter.
Almost all outward facing cabins on Voyager feature balconies as well as en-suite bathrooms and an innovative interactive television service 'Royal Caribbean Television', in which the guest can order on demand movies, room service, check their bill and more. Shows and major events are often broadcast live to stateroom televisions from the TV control center on board to accompany the usual assortment of international channels (BBC World, Cartoon Network, CNN etc.)
