Kukryniksy ( _ru. Кукрыниксы) were three
caricaturist s/cartoonist s in theUSSR with a recognizable style.It was a collective name derived from the combined names of three caricaturists (Mikhail Kupriyanov (Михаил Васильевич Куприянов), Porfiri Krylov (Порфирий Никитич Крылов), and Nikolai Sokolov (Николай Александрович Соколов)) who had met in
VKhUTEMAS , aMoscow art school, in the early 1920s. They started drawing caricatures under the joint signature since 1924.They became nationally famous in the 1930s after the rise of
fascism , drawing for "Krokodil ", the Moscow satirical paper. They received international recognition for their attacks onHitler ,Mussolini ,Himmler ,Goebbels , and Franco. During theGreat Patriotic War they established theTASS Windows forpolitical cartoon s andposter s.They also illustrated a number of books, including
Ilf and Petrov 's. Kukrynuksy are also authors ofSocialist Realism -stylepainting s with historical, political andpropaganda topics.As individuals, they are known as landscape and portrait artists.
All three were awarded the
honorary title ofPeople's Artist of the USSR (1958). They were also recipients of other awards.
