- Peter Stearns
Peter Stearns is a professor of history at
George Mason University , where he is currently provost (since January 1, 2000) with almost 40 years of experience as a teacher and administrator behind him. Stearns was Chair of the Department of History atCarnegie Mellon University and also served as the Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. During his tenure at Carnegie Mellon he played a key role in the rise of social and cultural history. In addition, he founded and edited the "Journal of Social History ". While at Carnegie Mellon he developed a pioneering approach to teachingWorld History to undergraduates.Besides his long career as a teacher and administrator, he is active in historical groups such as the
American Historical Society , theSociety of French Historical Studies , theSocial Science History Association , and theInternational Society for Research on Emotion . He attendedHarvard College and later received his PhD. from Harvard University. In his prolific career as an author and editor, he has written or edited over 100 works of literature.
