The village is located on the south-eastern coast of Nedstrandhalvøya, and its population is 241 (2008).[1]
Nærstrand was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt), which encompassed the parishes Hinderaa (Hinderå) and Sjærnerø, located on the northern (mainland) and southern (islands) bank of Nedstrandfjorden, respectively. The districts split in 1868 to create two separate municipalities, with a population of 1,680 in Hinderaa and 922 in Sjærnerø. In 1881 the name of Hinderaa was changed to Nerstrand, and between 1910 and 1920 it was changed to Nedstrand.
Together with parts of Avaldsnes, Skjold, Vats and Vikedal, Nedstrand (pop: 1,200) was merged into Tysvær on January 1, 1965.
