History
The oldest testaments of Klingenberg's history are a Roman stone of
consecration , a circular rampart from the earlyMiddle Ages and thealemannic "Grubinger" churchyard in Röllfeld.The castle "Clingenburg" was erected by
Conradus Colbo in1177 . The first officially documented mentioning of the town situated below the castle is from1276 . From1500 until1814 Klingenberg belonged to theArchdiocese of Mainz , afterwards to the Kingdom ofBavaria .Clay-mining began around the middle of the 17th century, the clay being used in
lead pencils as an addition tographite . For decades the municipal mines and their surpluses were a guarantee for prosperity to the citizens of Klingenberg.Today
Klingenberg is today famous for its red wine growing on the town’s terraced hills.
Klingenberger Weintage (Klingenberg’s wine days), the annualWinzerfest (vintagers’ festival) in August – is one of the oldest in the Main region. Wine testing also takes place each November and at the annual event "Weinberg in Flammen", where the vineyards are illuminated by hundreds of lights during one night in the summer.In
1976 , Klingenberg am Main became known for theexorcism and tragic death ofAnneliese Michel . The trial that followed - theKlingenberg Case - was attended by world media.
