History

The oldest testaments of Klingenberg's history are a Roman stone of consecration, a circular rampart from the early Middle Ages and the alemannic "Grubinger" churchyard in Röllfeld.

The castle "Clingenburg" was erected by Conradus Colbo in 1177. The first officially documented mentioning of the town situated below the castle is from 1276. From 1500 until 1814 Klingenberg belonged to the Archdiocese of Mainz, afterwards to the Kingdom of Bavaria.

Clay-mining began around the middle of the 17th century, the clay being used in lead pencils as an addition to graphite. For decades the municipal mines and their surpluses were a guarantee for prosperity to the citizens of Klingenberg.

Today

Klingenberg is today famous for its red wine growing on the town’s terraced hills. Klingenberger Weintage (Klingenberg’s wine days), the annual Winzerfest (vintagers’ festival) in August – is one of the oldest in the Main region. Wine testing also takes place each November and at the annual event "Weinberg in Flammen", where the vineyards are illuminated by hundreds of lights during one night in the summer.

In 1976, Klingenberg am Main became known for the exorcism and tragic death of Anneliese Michel. The trial that followed - the Klingenberg Case - was attended by world media. Today, Anneliese's grave in Klingenberg remains a place of pilgrimage for those who believe in the supernatural version of events.
