Elbe Tunnel

Elbe Tunnel

Elbe tunnel refers to a tunnel under the river Elbe. Currently two Elbe tunnels exist, both located in Hamburg, Germany, with additional tunnels planned or proposed in other locations. Without additional qualifiers, "Elbe Tunnel" (German: "Elbtunnel") currently most commonly refers to the four-tube Bundesautobahn 7 tunnel in Hamburg, Germany.

Elbe tunnels in Germany:

* The "old" Elbe tunnel (German: "Alter Elbtunnel", officially "St. Pauli Elbtunnel"), opened 1911 in Hamburg to connect St. Pauli and Steinwerder.
* The "new" Elbe tunnel (German: "Neuer Elbtunnel" or simply "Elbtunnel"), opened 1975 in Hamburg as part of the Bundesautobahn 7 to connect Othmarschen and Waltershof.
* The Elbe tunnel Glückstadt is a new tunnel project to connect the Bundesautobahn 20 in Schleswig-Holstein with the planned Bundesautobahn 22 in Niedersachsen. Construction for the 5.2 km long tunnel could begin in 2010 and be finished by 2015. * The Elbe tunnel Dresden (also referred to as "Waldschlößchentunnel") is an initiative by citizens of Dresden proposing a tunnel as an alternative to the planned new bridge "Waldschlößchenbrücke" over the Elbe in the old city. [ [http://www.elbtunnel-dresden.de/ Bürgerinitiative Elbtunnel Dresden] ] The bridge-building plans have been criticized as they jeopardize the status of the Dresden Elbe Valley as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
