- Holland 1
"Holland 1" was the first
submarine commissioned by theRoyal Navy , the first in a six-boat batch of theHolland class submarine . She can still be seen at theRoyal Navy Submarine Museum ,Gosport .History
In 1901 she was commissioned from
John Philip Holland and built atBarrow-in-Furness .In September 1902 she arrived atPortsmouth with the other completed Holland boat and along with HMS "Hazard" (their floating submarine base) made up the "First Submarine Flotilla", commanded by Captain Reginald Bacon. Recognizing how dangerous the new submarines could be, he proceeded cautiously with training his small band of volunteer officers and men. There were accidents and disappointments but just a few months later Captain Bacon reported that::"Even these Little Boats would be a terror to any ship attempting to remain or pass near a harbour holding them".
She was lost in 1913 while under tow to the scrapyard following decommissioning.
In 1980 she was raised. From 1983 after coating in anti-corrosion chemicals she was displayed in open air. However by 1993 it was apparent that the treatment had proved inadequate. A
fibreglass tank was built around her and she was immersed insodium carbonate solution from 1995. After four years the corrosive chloride ions had been removed and she was able to be displayed again after restoration work.
