Newbiggin (Stainton)

Newbiggin (Stainton)

Newbiggin is a small linear village in Cumbria, North-western England. It is in the Dacre civil parish about three miles (5 km) east of Penrith.

It is usually referred to and is addressed as Newbiggin, Stainton so as to differentiate it from the other Newbiggins in Cumbria, especially the one near Temple Sowerby whose post town is also Penrith.

The village consists of a quarter of a mile long line of houses on either side of the road that connects Stainton and the A66 to the B5288 at Clickham.

Behind the village street is the Flusco Quarry Landfill site which serves as a refuse site for a large part of Eden District.

At the northern end of the village is the Hanson plc Blencowe Limestone Quarry and Blockworks. This used to belong to the same company who opened the brick and cement works at Edenhall on the other side of Penrith.

Through the quarry site runs the course of the former Cockermouth, Keswick and Penrith Railway which had a station there called Blencow or Blencowe, not Newbiggin (Great and Little Blencow are situated a few miles to the north).

There was until recently a pub, the Joiners Arms, at the southern or Stainton end of the village.
