Stakhanov, Ukraine

Stakhanov ( _uk. Стаханoв) is a city in the Luhansk Oblast (province) of eastern Ukraine. The city is designated as its own separate raion (district) within the oblast.

The current estimated population is around 90,152 (as of 2001).

History

The city is named after the famous Soviet miner Alexey Stakhanov, as he started his career there. Before the name change in 1978 the city was known as Kadiyivka ( _uk. Кадіївка) [http://www.riak.lg.ua] .

City's economy depends on ferroalloys plant and coal mines.
