S. S. Huebner Foundation for Insurance Education

The S. S. Huebner Foundation for Insurance Education was established at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1941 to develop insurance education at the collegiate level by increasing the number of college faculty who teach insurance and enrich the literature in the field.

History

The first 25 years after World War II saw rapid growth in the insurance industry (especially life insurance) and the demand for teachers during that time outstripped supply. Executives from the life insurance industry identified the need for more trained insurance professors and created the Foundation in 1941 to meet the shortage, support new research, publish studies in the field and increase the number of insurance economics textbooks while honoring the legendary Wharton professor, Dr. Solomon S. Huebner. The Huebner Foundation was incorporated as a Nonprofit Corporation in 1954. The Foundation is supported with contributions from insurance companies, foundations, and program alumni.

Solomon Huebner

Soloman S. Huebner, for whom the Huebner Foundation is named, is regarded as the father of insurance education having taught the first insurance economics course at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1904. His courses were so popular that insurance was granted departmental status 1913. Soloman Huebner wrote pioneering texts on life insurance, property insurance and marine insurance and founded the [American College] in 1927 and the [American Institute for Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters] in 1942, while teaching at Wharton until his retirement in 1953.

Fellowship Program

The Huebner Foundation provides doctoral fellowships consisting of the tuition and fees of the Wharton School and a $20,000 living stipend for a period of four years to qualified students from the United States and Canada who are preparing for a collegiate teaching career. Fellows must promise that their intent is to follow a career teaching insurance and risk management upon receipt of their PhD. Occasionally post-doctoral grants are extended to academicians who seek to develop their capability for teaching or researching in the field.

Huebner Monographs and Library

The Huebner Foundation sells insurance texts from the Huebner Monograph Series, including ISBN 0-256-05119-4 “An Introduction to Mathematical Risk Theory” by Hans U. Gerber. The Huebner Foundation also maintains a research library on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania that houses insurance company data, scholarly journals, and historical textbooks.
