The United Nations has designated and helped to protect a number of important natural areas.
The Manitoba Provincial Government, many citizens, many environmentalists, and some First Nation Communities are committed to forming a United Nations World Heritage Park on the east side of Lake Winnipeg, and possibly a part of Ontario. This political process will take many years to complete, and the proposed park area is as large as the First Nations will allow, according to their traditional land use territories. Many people see the value in a protected area for wildlife, clean rivers, clean lakes, and an intact boreal forest unlike anywhere on Earth. This is one of the few largely intact areas of forest left in southern Canada. Most of the area has no roads, no logging, and no mining at present.See United Nations, or UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
