The Hive (place)

The Hive (place)

The Hive is a recording studio in North Hollywood, California that is owned and run by the members of the alternative rock band 311. It takes its name from the band's rabid fanbase which is commonly known as "The Hive."

Origin

In 2000, after having finished touring for their fifth studio album "Soundsystem", the five members of 311 grew distraught with having to pay upwards to $2,000 dollars a day in professional recording studios. Seeking a more independent-style place to work, they found a place in Burbank where they could record and pay rent of $3,000 a month. The band soon loaded in two 24 track analog tape machines and Pro Tools technology, fully furnished the place and began working on their next album.

Recordings done at the Hive

311 has recorded and mixed three albums at The Hive. 2001's "From Chaos", 2003's "Evolver" and 2005's "Don't Tread On Me". The band has worked with producer Ron Saint Germain on all three albums. When the band is in the process of working on an album at The Hive, they also live there together as well, as the studio is furnished with couches, televisions and a kitchen.

Other, lesser-known recording artists have tracked sessions at The Hive. Most notable being the Volcom Entertainment act Pepper (band) [http://www.pepperlive.com/photos.php?section=In+With+The+Old+Studio+Sessions+%40+The+Hive+in++Burbank+CA++7-05-03 1] who recorded the minor-hit "Give It Up" at The Hive.

Prior to 311 purchasing the studio, it was actively used as a music studio in the 70s and 80s. Notable acts having recorded there being Missing Persons and Adam Ant. Just prior to 311 purchasing the studio it was being used as a voice over studio for movies.

The Hive can be seen in more detail on Enhanced CD features on "From Chaos" and "Evolver".
