- Alfred Heaton Cooper
Alfred Heaton Cooper was an English landscape artist who worked in watercolours. He was born in 1864 in
Manchester and brought up inBolton ,Lancashire . As a student, he studied European art under George Clausen in London, but finished his studies prematurely to embark on a period of travelling. Whilst inNorway , he became fascinated by the rural lifestyle of theSogne region, where he eventually set up a studio beside the fjord atBalestrand . There, he married Mathilde.After realising that he could not sustain an income in the area, he returned in 1894 to Bolton but realised there was a greater potential audience amongst the tourists visiting the
Lake District . He shipped his log cabin from Norway to Coniston and later relocated toAmbleside .In 1903, Mathilde gave birth to
William Heaton Cooper , who would go on to also become a landscpe artist.His portfolio of watercolours cover rural British landscapes, usually of the Lake District, and scenes of Norwegian fjords, particularly Balestrand.
He died in the Lake District in 1929.
