Cosmicity

Cosmicity

Cosmicity is a synthpop music project by programmer/keyboardist/songwriter/singer Mark Nicholas. Mark derived the name Cosmicity from a combination of two words: cosmic and electricity. Cosmicity has played several American electronic music festivals, alongside bands such as And One, The Crüxshadows and Melotron. Mark's songs have appeared on more than 30 electronic music compilations next to bands like Information Society and Cause & Effect.

History

Mark Nicholas, the sole member of Cosmicity, took a realistic interest in music at the late age of fifteen. He was accepted into The University of Michigan School Of Music to study music and technology. He received his degree in May of 1995.

Cosmicity released about a dozen albums between 1994 and 2003, most of them under the American synthpop label A Different Drum. Although Mark's musical styles varied widely between smooth, slow ballads and light, danceable electronic pop, much of his lyrical output dealt with love and loss, some of it autobiographical. Much of his critically acclaimed "Pure" album was based on a particularly rough relationship.

Definitive end

Following the release of the successful concept album "Escape Pod For Two", Mark retired the band name in order to work on an edgier new sound. As one last gesture to fans of his earlier work, he compiled the "Definitive" anthology, including a bonus DVD documentary with several music videos and behind-the-scenes footage. A Different Drum's management took issue with certain portions of the footage, though, and wanted them removed before release. Mark refused, citing artistic rights, and the album was released on a different independent label.

Current projects

Under his given name, Mark released a new album in February 2007 called "Duchess 33", on his own label Dirty Electronic. One of the songs on "Duchess 33" is "Backlash", for which Mark was a finalist in the 2006 John Lennon Songwriting Contest [ [http://www.jlsc.com John Lennon Songwriting Contest] : [http://www.jlsc.com/winners/2006a/finalists.php 2006 Finalists list] ] .
