Surya Kant

Surya Kant (Sury as he is popularly known) is currently the President of TCS North American operations based at New York city. Tata Consultancy Services Limited (TCS) is the largest global IT consulting and services company headquartered in India. According to the TCS results for the year 2006-07, TCS North America contributed over half of the total TCS revenue.

In his illustrious career, spanning over 28 years so far, Sury has made significant contribution to the Indian Software industry and helped achieve the pre-eminence in the world that India enjoys in the area of IT. He established the presence of Indian software industry in 1987 in Japan. In the nineties, he was appointed the country manager for the UK where he recorded substantial increase in visibility and business for the organization, and the Indian software industry. Until 2005, he served as the Head of Operations, India Northern Region of TCS.

Working in the areas of software quality assurance and later delivery center management, he also contributed significantly to the quality journey in the Indian software industry – TCS has had the distinction of being the first organization in the world to have four of its delivery centers achieve PCMM version 2 level 4, and later the first enterprise-wide CMMI level 5 and PCMM Level 5 in the world, an indication of the best in class.

Sury is also known as a strong people-person; he initiated the Employee Satisfaction Survey in TCS many years ago. This survey, now branded as ‘Pulse’ has been much appreciated and recognized as a best practice within the Tata group. TCS as a company is known for its strong people practices – it has been ranked as the Best Employer in India by several surveys over the years.

Sury has traveled widely and worked all over the world (U.S., New Zealand, Japan, UK and India). He has an excellent grasp of cross-cultural issues and international business. He speaks several languages, including Japanese and is truly a global citizen.

He is currently a member of a number of bodies connected with various academic institutions. He is a frequent speaker at industry conferences and academic institutions. He was nominated as a director on the board of ITAA (Information Technology Association of America) in 2005. He is also actively connected with various social causes, one of them being the Adult Literacy program in India.

Education

Sury received his Masters in Electrical Engineering with specialization in Computer Technology from IIT Delhi (1978) and his Bachelors of Electrical Engineering with specialization in Electronics from Delhi College of Engineering (1976), both at the top of his class. He is a member of the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM), United States.
