Little Bromley is a village and civil parish in the Tendring district of Essex. The name "Bromley" is Old English for "broomy wood/clearing". [ [http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/english/ins/epntest/intro.html Key to English Place Names Home Page ] ] The village lies convert|9|km|mi|0 east northeast of Colchester and convert|3|km|mi|0 south of Manningtree. It is surrounded by the parishes of Lawford, Ardleigh, Great Bromley, Little Bentley, and Mistley. Its area is about convert|7.5|km2|acre|0|lk=on; the 2001 census reports a population of 289. [ [http://www.statistics.gov.uk/census/default.asp The census in England and Wales ] ] Most of the population lives on Bromley Road, the main road between Lawford and Little Bentley. The main economic activity is arable farming. The village shop, mentioned in [http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/PAGEVIEWER.ASP?fn=0000329S.TIF&dn=BCL8010tif&zoom=in Kelly's Directory of Essex (1914)] , ceased operating in the 1990s.

The Anglican church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin, is no longer used for regular worship and is in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust [http://www.visitchurches.org.uk/GazatteerChurch.asp?ChurchID=g_56#gazatteer] . A Methodist chapel, built in 1863, closed in the late 1980s.
