Shiva Purana

The Shiva Purana is one of the IAST|purāṇas dedicated to the Hindu deity Shiva. According to a tradition which is stated in the IAST|Vāyaviya Saṁhitā (the Venkateshvara Press edition) of this text, the original text was known as the IAST|Śaiva Purāṇa. It consisted 12 IAST|Saṁhitās and 1,00,000 IAST|ślokas (verses). After the reconstruction and the abridgement by Vedavyasa, the extant text comprises 24000 IAST|ślokas (verses), which he taught to his disciple Romaharshana (or Lomaharshana).

The recensions of the text

Several recensions of this text exist. The recension presented by the edition published by the Bangabasi Press, Calcutta (1907) consists of six IAST|Saṁhitās (sections), (1) IAST|Jñāna Saṁhitā, (2) IAST|Vidyeśvara Saṁhitā, (3) IAST|Kailaśa Saṁhitā, (4) IAST|Sanatkumara Saṁhitā, (5) IAST|Vāyaviya Saṁhitā (further divided into two parts, IAST|Pūrvabhāga and IAST|Uttarabhāga) and (6) IAST|Dharma Saṁhitā. The Bangabasi edition consists 260 IAST|Adhyāyas (chapters) of which IAST|Jñāna Saṁhitā has 78 chapters, IAST|Vidyeśvara Saṁhitā has 16 chapters, IAST|Kailāśa Saṁhitā has 12 chapters, IAST|Sanatkumara Saṁhitā has 59 chapters, IAST|Vāyaviya Saṁhitā has 30 chapters and IAST|Dharma Saṁhitā has 65 chapters.

The recension presented by the two other editions published by the Shri Venkateshvara Press, Bombay and the Pandit Pustakalaya, Kashi consists of seven IAST|Saṁhitās, (1) IAST|Vidyeśvara Saṁhitā, (2) IAST|Rudra Saṁhitā, (3) IAST|Śatarudra Saṁhitā, (4) IAST|Koṭirudra Saṁhitā, (5) IAST|Umā Saṁhitā, (6) IAST|Kailāśa Saṁhitā and (7) IAST|Vāyaviya Saṁhitā (also divided into two parts, IAST|Pūrvabhāga and IAST|Uttarabhāga). These two editions have 456 IAST|Adhyāyas (chapters). The IAST|Vidyeśvara Saṁhitā has 25 chapters. The IAST|Rudra Saṁhitā comprises 5 khandas (sections), section I (IAST|Sṛśṭikhaṇḍa) has 20 chapters, section II (IAST|Satikhaṇḍa) has 43 chapters, section III (IAST|Pārvatikhaṇḍa) has 54 chapters, section IV ((IAST|Kumārakhaṇḍa) has 20 chapters and section V ((IAST|Yuddhakhaṇḍa) has 59 chapters. The IAST|Śatarudra Saṁhitā consists 42 chapters, the IAST|Koṭirudra Saṁhitā has 43 chapters, the IAST|Umā Saṁhitā has 51 chapters and the IAST|Kailāśa Saṁhitā has 23 chapters. The IAST|Pūrvabhāga of the IAST|Vāyaviya Saṁhitā comprises 35 chapters, while the IAST|Uttarabhāga consists 41 chapters. The IAST|Vāyaviya Saṁhitā of these recensions mention the names of the five lost IAST|Saṁhitās as IAST|Vaināyaka Saṁhitā, IAST|Mātṛ Saṁhitā, IAST|Rudraikādaśa Saṁhitā, IAST|Sahasrakoṭi Saṁhitā and IAST|Dharma Saṁhitā.

Several other IAST|Saṁhitās are also ascribed to the IAST|Śiva Purāṇa. These are the IAST|Īśāna Saṁhitā, the IAST|Īśvara Saṁhitā, the IAST|Sūrya Saṁhitā, the IAST|Tirthakṣetramāhātmya Saṁhitā and the IAST|Mānavī Saṁhitā

Haraprasad Shastri mentioned in the Notices of Sanskrit MSS IV, pp. 220-3, Nos, 298-299 about another manuscript of the IAST|Śiva Purāṇa, which is divided into two khandas (parts), the IAST|Pūrvakhaṇḍa and the IAST|Uttarakhaṇḍa. The IAST|Pūrvakhaṇḍa consists 3270 IAST|ślokas in 51 chapters written in Nagari script and the IAST|Uttarakhaṇḍa has 45 chapters written in Oriya script. It was preserved in Mahimprakash Brahmachari Matha in Puri. The IAST|Pūrvakhaṇḍa of this manuscript is same as the IAST|Sanatkumara Saṁhitā of the Bangabasi Press edition.
