Shelkovnikov Beybut Martirosovich ( _ru. Шелковников Бейбут Мартиросович) (1837-1878), was a
Russia n general.A descendant of an old
Armenia n noble house he was born in Nukhi (modern-day Sheki in the Azerbaijani Republic). He participated in theCrimean War . In 1865 in theNorthern Caucasus , and in 1876 he was appointed as the commander of theBlack Sea region. During the Russo-Turkish War of 1877—1878 Shelkovnikov stopped Turkish forces in their attack onSochi and tookAbkhazia after defeating the forces ofMukhtar Pasha in a battle near Aladzhi. He was awarded theOrder of Saint George of the third degree onOctober 27 1877 for his victory in Aladzhi.Shelkovnikov's division met up with General
Lazarev Ivan Davidovich and together they marched on the Turkish line to take the Armenian province ofErzerum onOctober 2 . Erzerum was taken the next day, and Shelkovnikov was made governor of the province.External links
