Andrew Ilie (born 18 April 1976 in
Bucharest ,Romania ) is a formertennis player , who turned professional in 1994 and became a citizen ofAustralia . He has won two singles career titles (Coral Springs , 1998 andAtlanta , 2000). Ilie reached his highest individual ranking on 29 May 2000, when the right-hander ranked 38 in the world.Ilie quickly became a fan favourite, developing an almost cult-like following whenever he played at the Australian Tennis Open in
Melbourne , despite his relatively modest career achievements. He delighted spectators with adventurous and occasionally outrageous shots, and by ripping his shirt off in glee whenever he won a match, which further endeared him to his legion of fans.
