James Alan Irvine (born 12 July 1958 in Glasgow, Scotland) is a former football player, now working as a manager.
Irvine is currently the Preston North End manager after signing a 3½ year deal on 2007-11-20 at the football club after vacating his assistant manager position at Everton.
As a player, Irvine played for Everton, Crystal Palace, Dundee United and Blackburn Rovers. In 1992, he was part of the Blackburn team that won promotion to the new Premier League, only to announce his retirement from playing just before the 1992-93 season began.
Irvine returned to Goodison Park eighteen years after leaving as a player to join the coaching staff. He was also formerly academy director at Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United, where he coached players such as Steven Taylor and Peter Ramage.
