Pier Art Gallery

The Pier Art Gallery in Stromness, Orkney, was opened to the public in 1979. Margaret Gardiner 1904-2005 first visited the Orkneys in the 1950s and converted the old quay-side building to house her collection of modern paintings and sculpture . It began as a personal collection of her friends' work and as she has said, "'I hate being called a collector, for I never set out to collect". [cite web

] The sculpture and paintings of Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson and Naum Gabo formed the original works.

The permanent collection now includes paintings by Patrick Heron, William Scott, William Gear, Alfred Wallace and many other internationally regarded artists. The Gallery was temporarily closed in 2005 for reconstruction, re-opening in July 2007.
