University of Minnesota Students Co-op

The University of Minnesota Students Co-op is one of the oldest student housing co-operatives in the United States. As of 2006, it houses 28 University of Minnesota students in one building.

History

The corporation for the University of Minnesota Students Co-op, Students' Co-operative, Incorporated, began March 20th, 1940. It filed with the county of Hennepin in Minnesota on the morning of March 29th, 1940. The original incorporators and first Board of Directors were Jack Echternacht, President; William M. Feigal, Vice President; Douglas K. Amdahl, Secretary of the Board of Directors; Hubert S. Gibbs, Treasurer; and Alfred H. Lane, Melvin H. Clark, and Donald D. Evans.

Building

The University of Minnesota Students Co-op owns one building, which houses its members. The historic, three-story brick building is the second oldest surviving house in the University of Minnesota's East Bank neighborhood, and a member of the Fraternity Row Historic District. It was designed by the architects Kees and Colburn. It was constructed by M. Schumacher in 1908. An undated limestone coal-furnace room lies under the back addition.
